Tannat originates from the Madiran region of south-west France – the variety the so-called “French Paradox” is based on. Tannat is known for its huge colour and tannin concentration - in the Madiran region, this grape has the nickname of ‘la folle noir’ – literally ‘the crazy black grape’. It has a unique aroma and flavour profile – vibrant fruit alongside ‘earthy’ notes.

The colour of the wine is a rich and vibrant hue of real intensity.
The nose has a totally unique fruit profile of blackberry/blueberry notes and an underlying earthiness with hints of fountain-pen ink and a seam of French oak. At present, the wine displays a youthful vibrancy – our experience is that with bottle age, the primary fruit gives way to earthiness and increased complexity.
There is a burst of black cherry fruit with a fresh lively mid-palate. The winemaking was directed towards softening the tannins to create mid-palate ‘flesh’ – tannins support rather than dominate the palate here. Acid has been managed to enhance the wines vibrancy and fruit.
This huge wine will work well with a wide range of red meat dishes. We expect it to last a very long time – 10+ years.
Approximately 30% new French oak, un-fined and unfiltered. Estate bottled, hand-labelled and individually hand-numbered.

An Italian variety from the Abruzzo region. A rich black-fruit style designed for drinking with gamey red meats, duck confit etc.

The wine is a deep red/purple/black colour.
The nose is dominated by dark fruits – black cherry, black olive and Damson plum alongside cedar and vanilla oak notes.
The palate has a strong and rich attack of dark fruit which moves seamlessly through to a vibrant and mouth-watering mid=palate with real structure. There is a lovely balance between fruit, tannins and acidity with an attractive seam of spicy French oak.
Drinking nicely in its youth but with huge potential for ageing and development – with time in the bottle, the primary fruits will give way to further complexities such as tar, liquorice and leather.
Cellar well and you won’t have to think about it going backwards for 15 or more years.
Hand-picked grapes from low-yielding vines on the smallest of our Hill Country Estate terraces. Our winemaking procedures aimed at highlighting the black fruit spectrum and rich tannin structure. The wine was aged for ~ 15 months in French oak (40% new)
Un-fined and unfiltered, estate bottled and hand-labelled. A small production only – individually hand-numbered

An Italian variety originating from the Piedmont region of Northern Italy. Barbera expresses itself in the vineyard and wines in a similar way to Pinot Noir – we describe it as a ‘fruity version of Pinot Noir’ or ‘Pinot on speed’.

The colour is almost Pinot Noir-like in intensity and appearance – a vibrant crimson/garnet hue.
Very expressive berry-fruit with hints of dried herb and tobacco on the nose – the aromatics throw themselves out of the glass at you.
The palate has a gentle attack of ripe, clean fruit and silky tannins. Generous mid-palate depth moving through to a clean, lingering finish.
This is a special low-acid, low-tannin clone of Barbera brought in as more suited to New Zealand growing conditions.
Hand-picked grapes from low-yielding vines. Bottled without filtration. Estate bottled and labelled, each bottle individually hand-numbered.
